How Do I Protect My Investment?
Carpet is expensive. In fact, it is among the highest cost item in most homes. How do you get the most out of your investment?... by maintaining it! Just like your home and automobile, your carpet requires regular maintenance. It should be maintained through regular vacuuming, prompt spot removal, timely professional cleaning and the reapplication of a high quality carpet protector.
Vacuum as Often as Possible
Your carpet should be vacuumed as often as possible, at least once or twice each week, and professional cleaning should take place on regular intervals before the carpet has visible soil. As soil builds up in the traffic areas, walking on the carpet causes damage to the yarns and fibers. For carpet that is not properly maintained, even with a professional restorative cleaning process, the damage to the fiber cannot be corrected. Proper, professional cleaning performed on a timely basis removes damaging soil and grit left behind after vacuuming, thus protects your investment.
The bottom line is that carpeting which is properly and professionally cleaned on a regular basis will last longer, look better and will help create a healthier home environment for you and your family. All major carpet manufacturers including Mohawk, Shaw, and StainMaster require professional hot water extraction cleaning every 12 to 18 months to maintain the texture retention warranty.
There is much confusion about how often carpet should be cleaned.
You have probably heard "wait as long as you can before you clean your carpet..." or "once you've cleaned your carpet, it's never the same..." These widely used comments have stemmed from unfortunate encounters with unprofessional or unknowledgeable carpet cleaners. The result in many cases is that the carpet is left overly wet, or with an overload of detergent residue. This can cause many negative issues, including long drying times and premature re-soling. The consumer assumes that this is the case with all carpet cleaning and resolves to wait until the carpet is in dire straits to have it cleaned. The fact is that a carpet which is properly cleaned will have very modest drying times, will not re-soil quickly and will last years longer.
Not to mention that carpet not cleaned on a regular basis is an unhealthy carpet... The EPA publishes guidelines that recommends regular cleaning frequencies based on the number of occupants.
The EPA guidelines state that in a home with 2 adults, the carpet should be cleaned at least every 12 to 18 months. If you have children, allergies, live in a humid climate, smoke, have indoor pets, more frequent cleaning is recommended. Take special notice of heavy traffic areas as they may need to be cleaned more often.
One of the most common questions we are asked is "how often should I clean my carpet."
According to the Carpet & Rug Institute, as well as major carpet manufacturers such as Shaw & Mohawk, the correct answer is that carpet should be cleaned via "hot water extraction / steam cleaning" within 2 years of installation and then, no less than every 12 to 18 months thereafter. In addition, the carpet should be vacuumed at least once each week.
The fact is that this schedule is seldom followed by most home owners, or they have employed an inefficient / ineffective cleaning process.
These "inefficient / ineffective cleaning processes" would include in-home cleaning methods or any of the various "dry cleaning" processes. The end result is that the vast majority of homes have far too much damaging dry soil within the carpet fibers, and this dry soil is the root cause of most carpet issues, including uneven wear and traffic patterns.
After years of this dry soil collecting in the fibers and backing material, traditional carpet cleaning is not nearly as effective as it would have been if the above cleaning regiments were followed.
As the carpet begins to age and has not had the benefit of a proper and timely cleaning regiment, the wear to the carpet begins to increase and thus the overall "look" of the carpet begins to rapidly decline. The homeowner then calls a trusted cleaner, hoping to reset the clock and to restore the carpet back to its previous luster... and then they are disappointed.
For this reason Carpet Pros has developed a proprietary process specifically to remove the maximum amount of damaging dry soil, and in the process, restore your carpet to its best possible look.
While no cleaning process can correct wear
Carpet Pros has developed this proprietary and highly effective restoration cleaning process through two decades of continually searching for ways to extend the useful life of wall-to-wall carpeting. If your carpet has that "neglected look", and you want options to extend the life of your investment, ask us about this process ... it will radically improve the look of your entire home, and in the process could save you thousands of dollars.
Carpet cleaning is just like exercise! If you get into a routine and keep it up, you will see great results and feel better for it. And understanding the right way to clean carpet will help you save time by doing it correctly the first time with products that do the job right from the start. Not only will Seal of Approval cleaning products help keep your carpet looking great, they can also help meet the warranty requirements of the carpet manufacturer. Below are three simple steps to keeping your carpet clean and looking great:
Vacuum at the right frequency with a CRI-approved vacuum.
Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to resoil more quickly.
Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime.
Preventing dirt and grime from getting on the carpet in the first place is a great way to start keeping it clean. The following helpful hints can stop dirt in its tracks.
Use mats
Outdoor and indoor mats or runners can reduce the amount of dirt that enters the house.
Take off your shoes
You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take their shoes off before entering your home.
Change your air filters
Change air filters in your heating and air-conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer's directions. The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the fewer that fall onto the carpet.

A dry, absorbent, cleaning compound may be used as a substitute to accelerate drying time. For more detailed information on a specific spill, please search on the pull-down menu at right. Many fiber manufacturers provide a toll-free cleaning assistance and advice (consult your warranty).
Act Quickly!
Most carpet available today has been treated with a stain-resist treatment, so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken. The longer the delay, the higher the probability of a spill becoming a permanent stain. Remember, staining is influenced by many factors, and no carpet is completely stain proof.
Blot liquids
Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or or white paper toweling (no printing).
Do not scrub the area!
Scrubbing may cause pile distortion in the affected area. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry. For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a rounded spoon. Solids should be broken up and vacuumed until completely removed. If the spot can be identified, locate the substance in the spot removal computer and follow the directions carefully.
Pretest any spot removal agent
Pretest any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to be certain the solution will not damage the fiber or the dye. After applying several drops to the testing area, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or damage to the carpet. If a change occurs, another cleaning solution should be selected.
Apply a small amount
Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth and work in gently.
Work from the edges of the spill
Work from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent the spill from spreading. Do not scrub! Blot in order to absorb as much as possible, and repeat if necessary.
Continue
Continue using the first cleaning solution as long as there is a transfer of the spill to the cloth. It is not necessary to use all of the cleaning solutions if the first solution removes the spill.
Be patient!
Complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times. After the spill has been completely removed, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed. Some cleaning solutions will cause rapid soiling if the solution is not completely removed. Apply a one-half inch layer of white paper towels to the affected area, and weigh down with a flat, heavy object. Continue to change paper towels as needed.
One of the most crucial areas of carpet maintenance is removal of spots and spills. Acting quickly when anything is dropped or spilled, and always having the necessary cleaning materials at hand are of the utmost importance. We recommend a "WoolClean Spot Removal Kit," which can be purchased from a Wools of New Zealand Partner Retailer. Call 800-367-0462 or check the Wools website at www.woolsnz.com for the Partner Retailer nearest you. Frequent vacuuming is a wool carpet's best friend.
An upright vacuum with a beater bar/brush is the best type for cut pile carpet.
A suction-only vacuum may be required for loop pile Berber carpets to prevent excessive fuzzing.
Vacuum cleaner dust bag should be emptied when half full.
Exercise prevention maintenance by placing absorbent mats at the most frequently used entrances to your home.
Change or launder when these mats become dirty. Filters in your heating and air conditioning systems should be changed regularly.
Periodically clean traffic lanes and the areas in front of frequently used chairs with an absorbent powder (such as Host®, Dri-Matic® or Capture®).
Keep absorbent cloth or paper towels and cleaning solutions on hand for quick response to spills and accidents.
DO NOT apply stain repellent treatments which contain any silicone as they tend to accelerate carpet soiling.
(Some carpet manufacturers do not accept responsibility for complaints where such treatments have been used.) When having your wool carpet professionally cleaned, use a "WoolCare Specialist" certified by Restoration Industry Association.
Rugs deserve the same care as wall-to-wall carpet and, in some cases, require special attention.
Washing rugs
If your rug is small and the label says "machine washable," shake the rug outside first and then put it in the washing machine at the recommended temperature. Use warm water (90 to 105 degrees) and a mild detergent. Tumble your rug dry at the lowest heat setting.
Beating larger rugs
If your larger rug is easy to pick up, shake it outside first; then put it over a clothesline and beat it. Next, take the rug inside and vacuum it. If the label says dry clean only, then roll it up and take it to a professional rug cleaner. Save time and aggravation by calling first to see if the cleaner does rug cleaning - many do not.
Vacuuming area rugs
Area rugs with fringe require special technique. Use gentle suction and start from the center of the carpet, vacuuming toward the fringe and being careful not to catch the strands in the beater bar. Lift the carpet edge to vacuum beneath the fringe.
Caring for Oriental, Turkish or Persian rugs
Clean imported rugs according to your carpet manufacturer's specifications or bring in a professional cleaning service. Be gentle with fringe. For heirloom-type rugs, you need professionals.
Rotation
To insure even wear, your rug should be rotated once a year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two years.
Vacuuming
Oriental rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. Be sure not to vacuum the fringe with your beater bar! Use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
Padding
A quality pad used under your rug helps protect it from dirt, wear and slippage.
Make sure that you safely and immediately clean up spots and spills before they set.
First, soak up the excess liquid by blotting with a clean absorbent material. Do not brush or rub the stain.
Then spot-clean with a mild detergent-white vinegar-water solution. Do not over wet.
Rinse area thoroughly with water and a small amount of vinegar. Avoid wetting the rug's backing
Blot dry until most of the moisture has been absorbed
Allow to air dry. A fan or cool hair dryer can be used to hasten the drying process.
For stains that do not come out using these methods, ask our cleaning specialists.
Treatment of the affected area should begin immediately upon discovery. The more time that elapses before treatment, the more difficult a stain will be to remove. For best results, us Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Carpet Spot Remover and Cleaning Kit.
First scrape food spill gently with a spoon or dull knife – or a Mohawk Carpet Cleaning Key, removing as much solid materials as possible.
Apply Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Spot Remover or other low residue carpet spot remover that has obtained the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval to the stain.
Abnormally large or excessive stains may require hot water extraction method.
Professional cleaning is recommended.
Mohawk recommends using the Mohawk FloorCare Essentials line of Cleaning products and tools for best overall results and product safety.
These products are non-toxic, leave no soapy residue, and feature proprietary technology developed for the entire family of Mohawk flooring products.
Even with regular vacuuming, soil particles and oily dirt will cling to the carpet fibers.
With foot traffic these particles and oily dirt are driven deep into the carpet. We recommend professional hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months using cleaning products, equipment or systems that carry the Carpet & Rug Institute Seal of Approval. Periodic cleaning using the hot water extraction method performed by a certified carpet care professional, will refresh carpet appearance.
The most used areas, such as entrances, doorways, traffic lanes, and in front of chairs will collect dirt faster than other areas.
Clean these areas as they begin to show soil. This will stop dirt from spreading and will extend the time between professional cleaning.
Protect your carpet color In addition to frequent vacuuming, it's important to clean your carpet on a regular basis. Cleaning systems will remove the oily, sticky soil that vacuums can't take out, and will help keep your carpet looking great over time.
Cleaning systems target the soils that result from cooking vapors, air pollution, and tracked-in dirt.
The particles of oily soil deposited on carpet fibers can cause gradual but significant dulling of colors. The color isn't lost, but is hidden under the film. If this type of soil is allowed to accumulate, it begins to attract and hold the dry soil.
Get on a cleaning schedule – If carpet is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful.
Carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on the number of residents and amount of activity.
Choosing the proper cleaning system is important.
Some systems may leave residues which accelerate re-soiling and defeats the whole purpose of cleaning.
Shaws choice
Hot water extraction Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as "steam cleaning," although no steam is actually generated. The process consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water in the extractor to recover the used solution and soil. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home.
Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning
By hot water extraction (commonly called "steam" cleaning) by a professional cleaning service or do-it-yourself system, using equipment that is certified under the Carpet and Rug Institute's Seal of Approval program. Visit www.carpet-rug.org for a list of approved products/equipment.
Professional advantages Professional carpet cleaners are a great choice for your floor.
Their cleaning equipment has more extraction power than the rental units available to individuals, and the carpet should dry more quickly. True professionals also understand the equipment, know the proper cleaning agents for the situation at hand, and recognize the differences in fibers and carpet construction.
Locate a professional carpet cleaner Effective January 1, 2008, professional service must be performed by an IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) certified firm.
You may contact the IICRC at 1-800-835-4624 for information. This organization maintains a national directory of independent professional cleaners who are trained and certified in a variety of cleaning specialties. Call and explain that you have purchased a Shaw carpet, and be sure to ask for a cleaner near you who uses the hot water extraction system. If you prefer tackling the job yourself, check these do-it-yourself guidelines before you begin.
What about spot and stain removal?
Shaw's R2X Stain and Soil Remover is the only carpet cleaning product with the endorsement consumers have trusted for more than 100 years: the Good Housekeeping Seal. Because of our patented process, it's even easier to use than most spot cleaners. Our recommended spotting product also has the Wool Safe Certificate of Accreditation and the Carpet and Rug Institute's Seal of Approval. Routine spot removal- research has shown that many products sold for do-it-yourself spot removal clean poorly and their residues attract soil on the cleaned area rapidly afterward. The Carpet and Rug Institute's Seal of Approval program tests and certifies products that meet stringent standards and thus clean effectively, without damage to your carpet.
A regular maintenance program extends the life and the initial appearance of your carpet.
Today's carpet fibers are designed to hide and soil and reflect light, and have the ability to resist soiling and stains. However, the lack of apparent soiling does not eliminate the necessity of regular cleaning.
You'll need to vacuum your heavy traffic areas, such as hallways, stairs and exterior entryways, at least twice a week.
Vacuum less heavily used areas weekly. For best results, use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar or rotating brush, and with a strong enough airflow to penetrate the carpet backing. Most dry soil has razor-like edges that abrade carpet fibers, causing light to reflect differently and give carpet a dull appearance. Soil can damage the fibers permanently if allowed to remain in the pile.
No matter how often you vacuum, your carpet will still need heavy-duty cleaning from time to time.
Professional cleaning is required to maintain your Carpet One warranty. We would be glad to advise you about which cleaning method is best for your particular carpet. Hot water extraction, either alone or in combination with cleaning, is required to maintain your warranty, EXCEPT for the NATURA styles that must be cleaned through dry cleaning techniques.
A trained professional should perform this service every 1 ½ to 2 years to refresh the texture and rejuvenate the fibers in your carpet.
Have the cleaning professionals come to your home for a visual inspection, and obtain a written agreement before the work is started. You must retain your receipts for proof of maintenance service should a warranty claim arise.
When you and your cleaning professional choose a cleaning method, fiber content is the most important concern.
Most carpet today is constructed with synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester or olefin, and may be cleaned with most cleaning methods. Natural fibers such as wool, cotton, silk and sisal may require specialized care. Use a cleaning method recommended by the carpet manufacturer to maintain their warranty, and if you should have any questions or concerns about your new carpet, just call your Carpet One retailer.

Carpet Pros is the number one Charlotte firm in the highly specialized field of carpet repair.
It is rare to find a firm who can safely and professionally clean any fiber type, plus perform an expert job with repairing and or re-stretching your wall to wall carpeting. In fact, there are very few companies who have the knowledge and skill necessary to add these professional services to their menu.
Thousands of Happy Clients!
Carpet Pros is arguably the number one local firm in this highly specialized field. With thousands of happy clients & over 2 decades of experience, Carpet Pros is Charlotte's# 1 choice in the area of repairing and re-stretching all types of carpeting. From "bonded inserts" and transition molding replacement to correcting "Berber yarn pulls" and re-stretching wall to wall carpeting, Carpet Pros is the industry leader... Quite simply, no one does it better.
Why does carpet develop wrinkles?
There is no one reason for this, but the main issue is typically incorrect installation. Over the years the backing materials of carpet have changed and are much more stiff and less pliable. As a result, the installation process has changed, yet many installers still use the same old tools and procedures, thus not fully or properly stretching the backing material. In the absence of properly stretching backing of the carpet, and as the house settles, the carpet begins to move as well. Over time this results in wrinkles appearing randomly within the home.
Can't you just remove the wrinkle with a knee kicker?
No. Installing carpet with a knee kicker may be the reason the wrinkles have developed. Today's carpet should only be installed (or re-stretched) via the use of a "power stretcher". A power stretcher uses leverage to stretch the backing material of the carpet so that as the home settles, the carpet will contract as well and not wrinkle.
Can re-stretching carpet be a DIY project?
Maybe, but typically not. It can take many years and hundreds of jobs for a technician to be skilled enough to properly and effectively re-stretch carpet. In fact, re-stretching carpet can be much more difficult than new installation. For this reason Carpet Pros only hires former installers to re-stretch carpet. Only a seasoned professional can understand and compensate for the many different situations and challenges required to properly and effectively re-stretch carpet.
I have had my carpet stretched before by a different company, but the wrinkles have come back ... why am I having to pay to have this done again?
This is more common than you may think. One of the most common questions we face is "how long does your re-stretching last." We are asked this question over and over because clients have had other "professionals" re-stretch their carpet, but the process used is incomplete or incorrect, thus improperly done. The client is quoted a low price thinking that everyone's process is the same, and pays someone who is inexperienced (or worse) to restretch their carpet, only to have the wrinkles come back prematurely. Most companies offer a very short warranty for this service, that is if they offer a warranty at all. Rest assured that at Carpet Pros we always stand behind our work. In most cases, we offer a 3 year warranty for carpet re-stretching.
What about insurance? Is Carpet Pros covered?
Absolutely! Carpet Pros carries a million dollar policy and complete insurance coverage. You may wonder why this is important but it may also surprise you that many in this industry do not carry insurance. Don't find out after your carpeting has been damaged beyond repair that the "low price" competitor does not carry adequate liability insurance coverage.
Do I have to move all of my furniture out to have the carpet stretched?
No, while an empty room will cost a little less to stretch, we are prepared for furniture. With the use of sliders, we can even stretch under large pool tables.
What kind of results can I expect with a carpet repair?
If Carpet Pros is performing the repair ... typically very good to excellent. There are many basic factors that, if followed, result in a very good, or if ignored, very poor results. Carpet Pros is routinely called upon to correct "Frankenstein" type repairs performed by other companies and in the vast majority of cases we are able to correct and solve the issue with outstanding results. Having a highly trained and skilled professional perform a carpet repair can be the difference between an unsightly blemish and a near invisible carpet repair.
I don't have any extra carpet; can a repair still be done?
In most cases, yes. If there are closets with the same carpeting, we can typically take carpet from there to use for the repair.
How long will a carpet repair last?
If performed correctly, the carpet repair should last indefinitely.
Can a carpet repair be a DIV project?
Sometimes yes ... but typically no. This is usually because the tools necessary for a quality repair can be difficult to master. It can take years of experience in working with different types of carpet to perform a quality repair that will remain intact over time.
The carpet where the repair needs to be done is older and worn and the remnant is new... how is this going to look?
The initial level of satisfaction with any carpet repair is usually determined by how well the existing carpet matches the carpet remnant which is being used for the repair. Not merely that they are the "same" carpet, but that they have the same level of "wear'' and "soiling." Thus, a repair being performed in a heavy traffic area and using a newer remnant for the repair may leave the repaired area initially quite visible. Though, over time the repaired area tends to blend in with the surrounding carpet, thus the long term result is quite good and is certainly preferable to having to replace the entire carpet just because of a small area of damage.
How much experience does Carpet Pros have in performing carpet repairs?
This is a service that we began offering when we were founded in 1995. In this time we have pioneered many new techniques which lead to the best results in the industry.
Carpet Pros has over 2 decades of experience in cleaning the finest heirloom quality rugs from around the world.
We employ "old world knowledge", as well as the newest technologically advanced cleaning systems to provide superior cleaning results for your fine rugs. We offer a pick-up and delivery service, or you can bring your rug to us. At our facility, your rug will receive a complete inspection, followed by our safe and thorough cleaning process, designed to achieve maximum results. Having your rugs cleaned at our facility allows your rug to receive multiple treatments, thus the most thorough cleaning possible in a safe and controlled environment. Oriental & natural fiber woven area rugs should only be cleaned by a trained professional who understands the sensitive nature of these fine rugs. It is important to know that natural fiber rugs cannot be cleaned the same way as synthetic, wall to wall carpeting.
Why? Because natural fibers are much more delicate and complex than synthetic fibers.
Great care must be taken to ensure that there is no dye migration or fading of the colors. Improper cleahing methods can cause yellowing or browning of the yarns, shrinking of the backing material as well as pile distortion, thus ruining the look of the rug. Another important issue is dust removal. A natural fiber rug is designed to hide dry soil and can hold literally pounds of soil without it ever being visible. No amount of vacuuming or conventional cleaning can safely and effectively remove this damaging dry soil. You have a large investment in your fine area rugs... Always depend on a seasoned and trusted professional to maintain them, and they will be enjoyed for many generations to come.
To get a quote, it is helpful to know the approximate size and if the rug is a natural or synthetic fiber. (You might be able to find this information on a label in one of the corners of the rug.) We offer a convenient door-to-door pickup service, or you might choose to drop them off at our facility. If you need help unloading your rugs or need to drop them off outside of the stated hours, please call us for an appointment.

What method do you use to clean area rugs?
There is no one method used to clean area rugs. Different processes are required for fiber types. The proper method also is determined by the dye structure, soiling level as well as the type of backing material used in the construction of the rug.
Can't you clean an oriental / wool or silk rug the same way you clean regular carpet?
No. Natural fiber rugs are much more moisture sensitive than synthetic carpets. There are a host of negative effects to using the incorrect cleaning process on natural fibers, including shrinking, fading, dye bleed, yellowing, browning, etc...
What about pet urine odors?
There are excellent processes to treat and remove urine odors from area rugs. This can be a very involved process but excellent results can be achieved.
Can pet urine stains be removed?
Pet urine stains can be unpredictable. Synthetic fibers react better to urine stain treatments than natural fibers. In most cases, for wool and silk rugs the damage is done as soon as the urine is deposited onto the rug, thus the staining is most often permanent.
Can Sisal or Sea Grass rugs be cleaned?
Since these rugs are basically grasses, they are highly absorbent and darken easily and unpredictably with even the slightest moisture. For this reason, they are not meant to be cleaned via any type of "wet" cleaning process.
My rug says it is made of "Man Made Silk", "Faux Silk", or "Viscose." What is this?
These fiber names are all marketing terms used instead of saying "Rayon", which is the true fiber type. Rayon is manufactured from tree bark, thus is basically cellulose, which is used to make paper. These rugs are not meant to get wet at all and are very sensitive to foot traffic. Any type of wet cleaning can cause the fibers to begin to dissolve, leaving a yellowed appearance. It is our recommendation to avoid purchasing these rugs.
Why does it take 2-3 weeks to clean my rug?
Cleaning fine quality area rugs is a multiple step process which takes time to properly perform. Our goal is to ensure the safest and most effective cleaning results possible.
Carpet Pros is proud to be recognized among the most educated and experienced upholstery cleaning companies in the nation.
Very few textile cleaning firms possess the knowledge, experience and systems necessary to clean any type of upholstery.
From the most basic synthetics to the most delicate of natural fibers, Carpet Pros is among the industries the most trusted.
Carpet Pros is routinely called upon by other cleaning companies to clean upholstered fabrics that they are unfamiliar with, or to correct items they have damaged.
Why? Because most companies have a "1 size fits all" approach to cleaning and they attempt to clean upholstered fabrics with the same processes that they clean carpet, thus with unpredictable and even damaging results.
At Carpet Pros, our technicians receive extensive training on the safest and most effective ways to clean all types of textiles.
We perform fiber identification tests to ensure the proper cleaning process for each fiber type in your home, thus providing safe, superior quality cleaning results.
Make no mistake about it, not all upholstered fabrics are the same.
For this reason, be sure to place your trust in an experienced & knowledgeable specialist to clean your fine upholstered fabrics.
Urine and carpet simply do not mix.
When urine is deposited into carpeting, upon drying, it leaves behind a residue. Anytime moisture enters this environment, (from high humidity, rainy days, or having your carpet cleaned) this moisture reactivates the urine, thus causing bacteria to form. As long as moisture is present, bacteria will continue to grow, which is the base cause of the odor you may smell in your home. When the area dries, the bacteria then goes into a dormant state and the odor dissipates. Each time moisture is present in this environment, bacteria will reactivate and grow, thus the odor becomes more noticeable over time. If not properly treated, the bacteria will eventually damage the backing material of your carpet, making replacement a probability.
With repeated urine contamination
Or with larger pets, the urine may bleed downward through the carpet, into the padding or even into the sub-floor, making the treatment process much more challenging and complex.
Depending on the level of urine contamination, there are 3 different treatment options to solve urine odor concerns in the home.
Topical Treatment; Sub-surface Extraction; 3 Layer Treatment
Topical Treatment
This is the most common resolution for urine contamination. The carpet is extracted to remove any urine residue from the carpet, and then an enzyme based solution is applied to the contaminated area. This process eliminates the bacteria associated with the urine and is an excellent option for mild urine contamination.
Sub-surface Extraction
This process begins with the introduction of an enzyme solution in sufficient quantity for the solution to bleed into the backing material of the carpet, padding, as well as through to the sub-floor. The enzyme solution is then allowed to dwell in the area for sufficient time necessary to eliminate the odor causing bacteria . The solution is then extracted out of the padding and carpet with the use of a sub-surface extraction device, which leaves the area nearly dry, sanitary and odor free. This process is recommended for moderate to heavy urine contamination where pulling up the carpet is not a viable option.
Diagnosing, treating and eliminating urine contamination from the home is a very specialized process. Few cleaners are able to properly diagnose and implement the correct procedure to completely solve urine contamination. Rest assured that Carpet Pros has the experience and knowledge necessary to solve these difficult issues. The only way to remove urine odor from carpet is to treat the entire affected area with an enzyme solution. Cleaning alone is not effective and will simply cause more bacteria to form, thus causing the odor to become more noticeable, ultimately creating a larger and more difficult issue to solve. This is a much more involved process, but can, in many cases be the only way to solve the urine odor issue. This process is recommended for moderate to heavy urine contamination where it is practical to pull the carpet up and treat the problem from the "bottom up." The steps for this process are as follows.
Pull the carpet up.
Remove the effected padding
Remove any contaminated tac-strip
Clean & extract the carpet backing
Treat the sub-floor and underneath the baseboards with an enzyme solution
Seal the sub-floor with an odor barrier
Treat the backing of the carpet with an enzyme solution
Install new tac-strip (as necessary)
Install new padding
Reinstall carpeting
Clean carpet
Apply topical enzyme solution
There are occasions where a home can have "pet odors," but the odor is not caused by urine.
Many breeds of dogs have oils in their coat. The oil from the dogs coat can often be transferred onto the carpet, which presents an extremely difficult cleaning and odor issue to solve. Why ... ? Because oil and water do not mix.
If you notice that your house and your dog kind of smell the same, no amount of traditional "cleaning" or "odor treatment" will solve this issue.
This is because the odor is being locked into the carpet fibers by the oils from the dog's coat. Traditional cleaning and odor elimination processes are ineffective in this case because the oil from the animal's coat is "repelling" the very processes necessary to solve the problem. This means that the first step is to eliminating the negative odor is to remove the "oils" from the carpet fibers.
Removing the oils from the carpet fibers is accomplished through a propriety cleaning process that breaks down and removes the oils
Which then allows the cleaning and deodorization processes to be effective. This is a specialized process which takes a skilled and experienced professional to properly diagnose and perform. This is a process pioneered and exclusively offered by Carpet Pros, no other Charlotte area cleaner offers this service.
Pet urine can cause permanent damage to carpet and fabric, especially natural fibers such as wool or silk.
For synthetic carpets, the best opportunity to avoid having a permanent stain left behind is by immediately flushing and rinsing the contaminated area. Once the urine has dried, the damage to the carpet fibers may have already been done. For natural fibers, in most cases, the damage to the dye structure is immediate and the yellow urine stain is typically permanent.
Since the vast majority of carpeting is synthetic, there are treatment options available which do offer hope for complete urine stain removal, though there are many important variables.
These variables include the age of the carpet, the type of animal, the sex of the animal, the age of the spot, has the spot been previously treated, how long since the last cleaning, did the last cleaning include the proper reapplication of a quality carpet protector, etc...
Having a knowledgeable and experienced professional to treat yellowed urine stains on carpet is very important.
A cleaning technician who does not possess the necessary knowledge and experience may not even attempt to treat the stain, or worse, may improperly treat the stain causing additional damage to the carpet.
The dark lines that sometimes develop along baseboards, on stairs, under doorways or around door jambs are known as filtration soil. This unsightly dark gray soil is a major concern because it cannot be removed with any traditional cleaning process. In fact, in the vast majority of cases, home owners are told by their "trusted" carpet cleaner that there is no hope of removing the dark lines and seeing no other solution, they replace the carpet.
Sadly, most carpet cleaners do not fully understand the technical side of their profession.
They often have a "one size fits all" approach to cleaning, and seldom seek to educate themselves beyond the basics. Even those who say that they "treat" filtration soil, achieve little better than marginal results.
The fact is that the treatment and removal of filtration soil is not an easy task.
But with proper diagnosis and selecting the correct process, excellent and predictable results are achievable. At Carpet Pros, we pride ourselves on being able to properly diagnose and to then implement the correct process to solve the most difficult cleaning issues in your home, including those ugly dark lines.
Reduce permanent stains.
A single ugly spot can ruin a great looking carpet. Unprotected carpet does not repel spills as well as protected carpet. More effective removal of spots and spills may avoid permanent staining.
Help save your walking areas from becoming worn and matted.
Walking area soil is very abrasive and cuts carpet yarns like a knife. This damaging soil can easily bond to an unprotected carpet. By applying protector you will increase the life of your carpet dramatically. When you vacuum your protected carpet the soils will release from the carpet pile much more effectively.
Make your next professional cleaning more effective.
Having protector applied to your carpet will enhance your next cleaning. More abrasive soil will be removed with future vacuuming as well as the next time your carpet is professionally cleaned.
Make spots easier to remove.
If a spot is easier to remove, you will need less cleaner, less agitation, and less time. Many spots can be removed easily with just hot water.
Help avoid costly service calls.
Although you want to call us out to handle any spot you cannot remove immediately, carpet protector helps you clean more spots than you could without protector. You may be able to save a minimum charge by removing the spot yourself.

A rinse solution is pumped through the machine during cleaning, sanitizing and balancing the pH of your floor.
